All I Ever Wanted (Summer 2010): Part 4 (Vancouver)

Got up very early and zoomed north through Seattle traffic (though happily able to use the HOV lane) towards Vancouver for a quick visit en route to Salt Spring Island. The trip up and border-crossing were relatively pain-free, though Beck and I completely forgot about the Canada-is-a-different-country angle, precisely as how it would apply to our phones - we both got text messages with threats of fifteen dollar per meg billing rates as we crossed the border, so we were more or less forced to turn them off and go radio silent until we could get a wifi signal. It made getting into the city a tad more challenging - funny how quickly we come to rely on GPS maps as opposed to their paper forefathers - but we made it, found a relatively cheap parking garage and got ready to hit up the lovely town, needle exchange programs and all.

Stunningly, I have precisely zero photos from our morning/afternoon walking tour of Vancouver. It seems that, unable to use our iPhones, we were confused about technology in general. So it goes. It's a fantastic city - very cosmopolitan, clean, and I'm sure hella expensive to live in. The tour we took is linked above; wasn't too long (we broke it up with lunch) and gave us a good idea of the scope of the city. As advertised, you'd have no idea that the residential areas, quiet as they were, were practically on top of a major downtown area. Great shops and restaurants, historical buildings, public art exhibits, you name it. Vancouver essentially has it figured out.

We lunched at the Raincity Grille on the West End, again on Ariel's recommendation. I *tried* to go light, opting for a Canadian bacon / cheese sandwich with a side of greens instead of a burger-fries or fish-chips combo, only to discover that said CB&C sandwich had approximately two pounds of HAM on it. Egads! It was, predictably, awesome. Beck had a cucumber gazpacho and, SHOCKER, mussels, and they were excellent as well. In what would become a trend, we had a WCW (Wacky Canadian Waitress - not sure what's going on up there, but something goofy went on at essentially every meal). She basically spent the entire time flirting with Beck and threatening to steal our food, also mockingly congratulating me on eating well. And claimed to not know where anything in Vancouver was as she had "just moved there three years ago." Okay...

Highlight of the tour, imho, was the art gallery and massive pendulum in the Hong Kong Bank. Tres cool. We had some time to kill at the end (before the race to the ferry, which I already alluded to here), so we hit up a NICE coffee house called Caffe Artigiano that had come recommended - I had an excellent French-pressed coffee while we enjoyed hooking back into the tech-world via yoinked wifi. Beck found a recommended Korean place for an early dinner, and I had bul go gi for the first time in who knows how long (a Korean barbecue dish that was a routine favorite in Natick and Grafton). Our WCW for this meal stopped serving us for fifteen minutes mid-meal to enjoy a popsicle over in the corner. The meal, once delivered, was spicy enough to make us sweat, which is exactly the point of Korean food - good stuff, and we booked it out of there back to the car for a sprint to Tsawwassen.

After the aforementioned brief return to the U.S., the ferry ride was a relative breeze. Beck even saw some orcas (again, un-photoed!) as we left the original dock, and we watched the sunset over the Pacific as we crossed through the night to the highly anticipated apex of our trip, a three-night-two-day night stay in a B&B called Blackberry Glen. We unfortunately arrived at the dock at 10:45, putting us at the B&B after 11; our gracious hosts did not miss a beat, though, greeting us with baked oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies,

milk, and a complimentary bottle of home-crafted apple wine. They gave us maps of the island and all kinds of recommendations for the next days, plus our suite was, indeed, just that, and set up with a coffee/tea bar

(and that doesn't even capture the whole thing) and a bath-only bathtub in which Beck worried I would spend all my time. We were, though, pretty tired after a long traveling/touring day and very excited to sink into a plush king-sized bed. Miles away from Phoenix heat, work, and concern in general, we sunk asleep, thrilled to wake up to a couple of days of island touring and self-indulgence. And at that, we are quite talented...

All I Ever Wanted (Summer 2010): Part 3 (Seattle)

  • I neglected to mention that on both Saturday and Sunday, figuring that we would be doing a fair amount of eating and lounging on this trip, Beck and I hit the hotel gym. So yes - having stayed up until the wee hours dancing like maniacs, we went to the gym *before* brunch on Sunday. We are heroes..
  • The brunch was good, with everyone bleary-eyed and recounting the wedding as expected. Favorite exchange: "Elliot, your Tufts friends are very serious." "What do you mean, older relative?" "They are quite serious about their partying." Cha-ching!
  • Beck and I caught a cab with Matt to the airport, but not until after we had another run to Pinkberry. Tap that vein!
  • Flew up to Seattle sans incident, then drove from the airport out to Tad's & Katy's (Beck's former vet colleague) & *James's* place out in Orting, WA. Beautiful countryside home in the heart of berry country and with a nice view of Mt. Rainier:
  • Had a delicious steak and spicy squash dinner, then took a nice walk with the fam and dogs down a local river:
  • and came home for banana splits. The evening drifted to vet talk, and we eventually hit the hay to get ready for a touristy day in Seattle.
  • Great early breakfast at T & K's, the hit up touristy sites in downtown Seattle. The EMP (Experience Music Project) featured an instrument sculpture and Supremes gowns:

  • On Ariel's rec, made our way to Pike's Place and Beecher's for lunch, followed by the usual touristy spectating of fish-tossing and such:

  • And while walking in the market, we were floored by a delicious cinnamonomy smell wafting through the air. We took a direct left and discovered the must-visit pastry shot of downtown Seattle - if you are ever in the Seattle area, you MUST stop by Piroshky Piroshky, a Russian bakery featuring de-friggin'-licious sweet and savory piroshkis (big as your face Russian hot pockets, more or less - soooooo good).

  • We when-in-Romed and hit up a non-Starbucks's Seattle coffee house on the way back to the car, giving us time to hit up the iPhones:

  • Headed back to Tad's and Katy's, grabbed some fresh-picked berries from a farmstand, and drove from there to Tacoma for a portside fish meal. Fish and chips for me, Mussels - again! - for Beck, a great Microbrew on Tad's rec called "Mack & Jack's" and a great time hanging out with friends:

  • Back to Orting, We packed up for an early AM departure and said byes to everybody. On to Canada the next day - in another post - but we capped the evening by sharing James's first experience of the sourness of a strawberry popsicle. He was, shall we say, subpleased:

All I Ever Wanted (Summer 2010): Part 2 (Denver / Wedding)

  • Took a bus-ride south of Denver to a pstoral, faux-ranch wedding site. Our ride included a troubadour who resembled the love child of David Bowie and John Denver; I called "American Pie" an an inevitable component of his setlist and was not wrong.
  • Nice, casual wedding ceremony atop a hill that over-looked the idyllic scenery. The setting received a sort of meta-commentary during the ceremony (i.e., something along the lines of "we should be really appreciative of the beautiful scenery we are experincing at this very moment!") and was indeed lovely:

  • And the bride and groom were as happy as I've ever seen two people be. Here's a fairly "captures it all" photo, taken after Elliot stomped the glass in traditional Jewish fashion:

  • Obligatory Tuftsmen Group Shot:

  • Fun wedding, fun reception - good apps and dinner, open bar, good conversation (had a great chance to catch up with Andy and Ariel in particular), touching toasts, an ubercute slideshow (the highlight of which was a video of Briar helping a hospital-gowned Elliot walk around after an emergency appendectomy, and the cameraman (Elliot's brother?) perspicaciously humming "Here Comes the Bride") and a heck of a dance party afterwards featuring a cover band and some interlude DJ'ed music. And no wedding cake - the couple met while studying abroad in Italy, so gelato made the occasion:

  • I'll include some dance party highlights below - trust that the Tuftsmen routinely make the party, but I think this time we merely pushed it to 11; this would have been raging with or without our usual dose of craziness. As expected, there was a rehash of "Paradise City," "Like a Prayer," and all of your usual favorites. The scene was fairly crazy with a number of some sort of grey goose / cranberry juice shot interludes. In fact, Zach's backing up his Maker's Mark with one right here:

  • With... video?
  • I know, I know - energy drops out mysteriously and intermittently during the week, but I'm crowd-surfing at wedding receptions. I don't get me, either.
  • The affair ended pretty late, and again, the only drawback of being bussed out is that you have to wait for the buses to take you home - Beck and I were fairly zonked about an hour before we actually got to leave. One nice touch by Briar and Elliot (in a wedding that featured who knows how many (and how expensive) nice touches) was a goodie bag featuring a late night snack burrito for the ride home; Zach in particular was stoked about this:

  • We arrived back at the hotel half-asleep with no chance of an after-after party. Crash and get ready for the next morning's post-chaos breakfast... for another post.
