The Maddux-Year of Beck

Happy Happy B-day to the Werbakeuh who turned a spry 29 plus mumble mumble this week. We managed to both get off at 7 on Tuesday and headed over to the Melting Pot for a celebratory dinner. Mmmmmelting pot, or as Beck put it, nomnomnomcheesenomnom. Pretty ridiculous prices, but you pay for the ambiance and the service. Great meal and a great time.

Interesting fact: Beck's b-day falls on the same day as the anniversary of the aforementioned 20 K game by K-Wood (pronounced Kwəd) (and yes, I am an html bad-ass for putting a schwa in my post). So that'll be relatively easy to remember. Wood K'd two and picked up the save that day; all is reasonably okay in Cub-land.

As opposed to, say, Spurs-land. Bud Chris is doing a great job of detailing the fan emotions

Interestinger fact: two days after Beck's birthday back in 19**, the Grateful Dead played what is widely regarded as their Best Show Ever. That's hyperbolic; I think what actually happened is just that it's an exceptionally excellent show and a very clear source tape got distributed very widely as the representative bootleg. Consequently, lots and lots of peeps have heard it, so it gets a lot of votes in such surveys. Some of the stage banter from this show is classic and equally well known; just say "Take a step back; and another step back!" to your run of the mill deadhead and they'll nod knowingly. Anyhoo, fantastic show regardless of its actual place in the pantheon, and given that back in 19** they didn't have the internet, I'm guessing that it took a couple of days for the Pony Express to spread word of Beck's birth to Jerry et al up at Cornell. They celebrated the nascent Beck by playing this gem; if you have half an ounce of internet skills and any sense, you'll go grab it on the interwebs now. Here's the setlist to aid your search:

05/08/19**
Barton Hall (Cornell University) - Ithaca, NY

Set 1:
New Minglewood Blues, Loser, El Paso, They Love Each Other, Jack Straw, Deal, Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication, Brown-Eyed Women, Mama Tried, Row Jimmy, Dancin' In The Streets

Set 2:

Good stuff. In the meantime, we are jamming here (we = Sparkle, Wrigley and I) at the apartment, cleaning up a bit and awaiting the imminent arrival of the A-dog. I got a last practice round in yesterday and returned to earth a bit; +2 thanks to some terrible driving and putting. So stay tuned. Pictures forth-coming. And the like.

"Long distance runner..."
